A Black Feather, A poison pen...

entre locura y pendejismo

Friday, a few more phone calls to field than before, but not the anticipated deluge. which is fine by me.

It's time for me to play "critic's corner" since i've been in a very media-hungry mood this week.

First review: The RecruitWell paced after the first 30 minutes, pacino stays relatively low-key (for Pacino) until he gets to have his big ranting sequence (and really, other than his performance in the American remake of Insomnia where he was wound very tightly but never really went off, which worked brilliantly for his interpretation of the character, what's a good Pacino movie these days without a ranting sequence.) Colin Farrell and Bridget Moynihan have a pretty good onscreen chemistry as lovers/adversaries once the second act of the movie gets underway. I would have rated this higher, but the relative sparseness of the first third of the film kept my interest in the characters from really taking hold until the writer and the director finally got in sync and started jacking up the tension. Also, without giving anything specifically away, i expected the ending i got which was rather disappointing. i give it 3.25 stars out of 5

My next review item is the show Kingpin which, from what i understand has generated some measure of controversy among Latino activists.

Speaking as a Latino, i have only this to say, fucking get over it already. Is it a great show? No. Is it a good show? damn skippy, it is. I give a good deal of credit to the cast and the creators of this show for mixing solid drama with the occasional moments of high camp and managing to make it not look utterly stupd in the process. If the activists want to find Mexicans to be embarassed by, they should look at 75% of the kids i went to grade school with. the kinds of little dumbasses who were actually looking forward to doing their first stretch in "la pinta." Puros piches cabrones the whole fucking lot. You want Mexicans to be embarassed by, just look at the ruling government in Mexico for the last 60 or so years, how a nation rich in resources could be ground into such a crushing degree of poverty is the bigger embarassment than fictional characters on TV, okay. I've caught both of the episodes that have aired so far, and if i may, just to add to the controversy, i give this show 4.5 out of five tortillas on my rating scale. In other words... i say Kingpin is Spic-Tacular...
